Special Olympics International wanted to create an exciting, first-of-its-kind event to promote the annual Global Week of Inclusion in July of 2025. With just under two months’ lead time and a very low budget, they turned to Boncom to create an athlete-led experience that participants would never forget and that would also make a lasting impact.
The annual Global Week of Inclusion highlights the power of sports to unite people of all abilities by showcasing the joy, confidence, and fulfillment that Special Olympics enables for people with intellectual disabilities. The key message of this annual celebration is that we are all better together. So Boncom asked: how might we bring together Special Olympics athletes, celebrities, and professional designers to create artwork that communicates this empowering message of unity?
Boncom created the Athlete Design Co-Lab, a creative gathering driven by teams built around 25 Special Olympics athletes from across the globe. Each team had one goal: to tell the athletes’ stories. The athletes, celebrity supporters, and Boncom graphic designers worked together in groups to develop original designs for future Special Olympics merchandise. Each design celebrated inclusion and the athletes’ personal experiences with the transformative power of sport. Participants convened in Salt Lake City at America First Field, where one of the VIP club suites was briefly transformed into a working creative studio. Local partners the Larry H. Miller Company donated this venue space, catering services, and customized athlete merchandise for the athletes in attendance. Other local partners such as Owala, doTERRA, Crumbl, the Jazz, the Mammoth, the Bees, Real Salt Lake, FC Royals, Kodiak Cakes, SkullCandy, the Hogle Zoo, and more also generously contributed in support of the event. Boncom handled all aspects of the Co-Lab, from securing a venue, to making travel arrangements for celebrity guests, to staffing and documenting the day, and to providing post-event promotional assets and finished design files for merchandise.
A low budget delivered an estimated 10x ROI in combined donations and earned media value.
Earned media across local and national outlets, amplified by dozens of influencer partnerships all built in under 60 days.
Permanent revenue stream: 20+ athlete-designed products are still for sale on the Special Olympics shop.
A model for future Global Weeks of Inclusion.
